MoForever Winter 2021 | 8 with COVID-related non-contact distribution of medical supplies. What drove you to switch to an in-house role? I was drawn to the diversity of work. Moving in-house to a late-phase startup like Zipline gives me the chance to be more of a generalist. I move from an employment law issue to an international risk compliance issue to creating an entity in India to negotiating and drafting a contract with a major retailer or health system in the United States. In my first nine months at Zipline, I was lucky enough to travel to and work in places like Ghana, Rwanda, Ethiopia, India, France, and Switzerland. It’s been quite the whirlwind, not only in terms of the fascinating corporate and regulatory compliance issues in each jurisdiction but also negotiating against and working with various stakeholders and the cultural implications that come with that. Working for a company like Zipline makes it easy to get out of bed every morning. What did you learn at MoFo? MoFo provides you with the legal and client-service skills and rigorous training to make a difference as a lawyer. I have a tribal loyalty to the Technology Transactions Group including Billy Schwartz, Tessa Schwartz, Paul Jahn, and Aaron Rubin. I have a lot of respect for Billy especially. He taught me so much about general contract drafting practice, supply chain contracts, and hygiene around drafting. I still talk to Tessa, my mentor, on at least a monthly basis. Tessa and Billy taught me that, when you review or draft documents, you need to work with the client to learn about the product or service, the technology behind it, and the relevant business goals underpinning those documents.
