How does your team manage such a vast range of regulatory concerns? We have great relationships with regulators in the United States, Rwanda, and Ghana that are based on trust, transparency, and empathy to regulators and their motivations. The main goal of aviation authorities is to maintain air space safety and protect the people underneath it. It is a noble and important goal that we are also committed to. Drones operating in regulated airspace is new. Regulators want to be patient and make sure they understand our technology. Ultimately, it is up to us to continue to gain the trust of our regulators and grow sustainable and fruitful relationships with them. How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected Zipline’s operations? COVID has shined a light on the power of contactless technology to help humanity and the healthcare industry. In April 2020, Novant Health and Zipline secured the first U.S. regulatory approval for long-range autonomous delivery that allowed us to begin delivering PPE for Novant Health in North Carolina shortly after COVID broke out. In Ghana, we began delivering active COVID lab samples to Accra. Seeing our drones fly past skyscrapers in Accra to deliver active lab samples was absolutely incredible. In Rwanda, we began delivering chemotherapy medication to immunocompromised cancer patients who couldn’t afford exposing themselves to others.
