And as a growth investor over the past four decades, I believe GA will uncover additional opportunities to address some of the durable structural shifts we are witnessing because of the pandemic. What can GCs learn from COVID-19? I think COVID-19 has taught us that we are all interconnected. GCs need to think ahead when we spot an issue in one region because it often creates issues in other areas. What surprised you about going in-house? Initially, I thought in-house work would be more procedural — facilitating signing of documents. But I discovered GCs today have much more impact on the business overall. In my experience, I’ve found in-house work to be more diversified and more challenging, given how fast business moves today. I identify legal issues within a global framework, and I need to think more thoroughly about the implications of contract clauses and terms. Ultimately, I feel more responsibility because I experience the real-life effects. The perception may be that lawyers who stay in law firms are more driven than those who move in-house.
