The Morrison & Foerster Foundation 2020 Report

THE MORRISON & FOERSTER FOUNDATION In 2020, the Foundation issued matching gifts totaling nearly $58,000. We gave much more through challenge grants, including the special giving campaigns discussed in the Urgent Response section of this report, responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and the critical need for racial justice. INDIVIDUAL GIFT MATCHING The Foundation matches donations, up to $500 per person annually, made by eligible lawyers and staff to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations that meet our giving guidelines. In 2020, we matched gifts to charities such as AIDS Legal Referral Panel in San Francisco, California; Hartley House in New York City, New York; Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in Los Angeles, California; and When We All Vote in Washington, D.C., as well as to nonprofit organizations in other parts of the United States. In total, the Foundation contributed more than $41,000 in individual matching gifts to more than 120 charitable organizations. LAW SCHOOL GIFT MATCHING In a separate program, the Foundation matches donations, up to $500 per person annually, made by the firm’s lawyers to their respective law schools. In 2020, we donated more than $16,000 in matching gifts to 27 law schools. CHALLENGE GRANTS In addition to its matching gift programs, the Foundation occasionally offers to match the amount raised by firm personnel to benefit charitable causes of particular importance to Morrison & Foerster lawyers and staff. These challenge grants can have an office-specific or firmwide interest. Our 2020 challenge grant program was very active. In addition to the significant Urgent Response campaigns described earlier in this report, we offered special local matching opportunities, such as an offer early in the pandemic to match individual donations to the SF-Marin Food Bank in San Francisco, California. That campaign resulted in donations to the food bank of $21,000 by individuals and $21,000 by the Foundation.
