MoForever Alumni News Winter 2021

MoForever Winter 2021 | 2 In 2020, our MoFo family, our clients, alumni community, and friends were personally affected and tested in ways we never could have imagined as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the middle of this global health crisis, we also experienced a watershed moment in the battle against racial injustice. The Firm focused our fight against racial injustice in four core areas: legal services, charitable donations, community action, and education; establishing corresponding committees to allow for broad engagement across the Firm and the long-term action necessary to ensure this important work gets done. On COVID-19, we kept our clients apprised of the business impact of the pandemic through our COVID-19 Task Force, resource center, and three COVID-19 Impact Surveys, including our latest Impact Survey: COVID-19 and the Road to Recovery . I am proud of all the work we have done and look forward to doing even more this year. In 2020, our lawyers dedicated tens of thousands of hours to vital pro bono work. We spearheaded the California Small Enterprise Task Force for small businesses to access support from lawyers and financial professionals, resulting in the launch of The California Rebuilding Fund, which will provide millions of dollars in loans to support California’s smallest businesses to recover from the effects of COVID-19. Watch our video to learn more about our Pro Bono efforts. In our Alumni Update, you will learn about the COVID-19-related non-contact distribution of medical supplies and innovative work MoFo alumnus Keval Patel is doing as Deputy General Counsel, Corporate for Zipline International Inc., an automated drone delivery company. Thank you, Keval, for your contribution. You’ll also read about the vital human rights work MoFo alumna Beth Van Schaack, Leah Kaplan Visiting Professor in Human Rights at Stanford Law School, is doing to teach young lawyers to pursue their passion for human rights in our Pro Bono Update. Thank you, Beth, for your important work. In our continued commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our Firm, MoFo has achieved “Mansfield Certification Plus” for the third year in a row as a result of successfully reaching at least 30% women, communities of color, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities representation in a notable number of current leadership roles and committees. We also appointed Natalie Kernisant as Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Firm. Congratulations to Natalie for her continued standout contributions to the Firm’s D+I initiatives. Sharing our passion for promoting diversity and inclusion in the legal profession and beyond, in our Diversity Update, you’ll read about the many accomplishments of alumna Danielle Coleman, Senior Litigation Counsel for VMware, who recently earned recognition from the Minority Corporate Counsel Association as a 2020 Rising Star. Congratulations, Danielle, on this remarkable achievement. Throughout 2020, we advised on market-changing deals and bet the company litigation. Our Corporate Department advised Salesforce on the intellectual property, privacy, and regulatory aspects of its $27 billion acquisition of Slack Technologies, Inc., and SoftBank in the $40 billion sale of UK-headquartered multinational semiconductor and software design company Arm to NVIDIA. Our Litigation Department delivered two major successes for Nevro Corp. against Boston Scientific Corporation and Stimwave, including, in the latter case, securing a preliminary injunction, which is very rarely granted in patent cases, and secured summary judgment for more than 70 companies that roast, package, and distribute over 90% of coffee sold in the United States, including Starbucks Corporation, the J.M. Smucker Company, and other major players, effectively ending a 10-year litigation battle. And, we were delighted to welcome 15 new partners across our global offices and practices. Read about our new partners in our Firm Update. Also, sadly, we said goodbye to two beloved members of our MoFo family, Drew Days and Marty Dunn. Drew was a trailblazer and lifelong civil rights lawyer, as well as a cornerstone of our Appellate and Supreme Court practice. Marty, who spent 20 years at the SEC, loved securities law and spent much of his life sharing that passion with others. Read about their indelible impact in our In Memoriam section. Lastly, thank you to our MoFo family, our clients, and our alumni community for making a difference in 2020. We appreciate the opportunities we had to engage with you virtually and are looking forward to seeing you in person someday soon. Stay in touch! Larren M.
