MoForever Alumni News Winter 2021
MoForever Winter 2021 | 18 Marty Dunn joined Morrison & Foerster as partner in 2013 after a long and distinguished career at the Securities and Exchange Commission. Marty’s reputation as a brilliant securities lawyer preceded him, having overseen numerous landmark initiatives, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the easing of capital formation for small businesses. However, those who worked alongside him during his all-too-brief tenure at MoFo knew him as a kind and brilliant man who was generous with his time, talents, humor, and passion for problem solving. Marty passed away on June 15, 2020, at age 56. MARTY DUNN IN MEMORIAM It is with great sadness that we bid a final farewell to our former partner, colleague, and friend, Marty Dunn. Marty joined Morrison & Foerster in 2013 as a partner in our Corporate Finance practice. By the time he joined the private sector, Marty’s sterling reputation as a gifted and passionate securities lawyer preceded him thanks to his previous two decades spent in public service at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Marty served in the roles of chief counsel, deputy director, and acting director of the SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance. He was highly regarded in these roles, offering incisive counsel to public companies. During his distinguished tenure at the SEC, Marty led the charge on a number of its most significant initiatives, including disclosure, governance, and capital-raising, implementing the wide-reaching Sarbanes-Oxley Act, adopting plain English requirements, implementing electronic proxy delivery, and easing capital formation for small businesses. Marty’s proclivity for securities law had few parallels; his cognizance and insights were sought by clients and colleagues alike, many of whom considered him a friend. Although an unmistakable legend in his field, Marty was known to be down-to- earth and approachable, and he matched his visionary practice with a fierce passion for teaching others about the intricacies of securities law. Marty thrived on solving problems— the more complex, the better. He loved breaking down dense and complicated concepts and making them easy to understand. That’s part of what made him a perpetually effective mentor, teacher, and counselor. Marty was an in-demand public speaker on securities law, booked at countless conventions and events. Beyond his expertise and accomplishments, he was widely sought for his ability to enliven a panel discussion with a crowd- pleasing joke or story. Marty earned his J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law, and his B.B.A. from Notre Dame University. Marty received numerous awards across his career, including a Band 1 ranking for securities regulation in Chambers USA . He also received the Capital Markets Award, Regulatory Simplification Award, and Law and Policy Award from the SEC. The depth of Marty’s knowledge, accomplishments, and wisdom are too broad to capture here. He was our esteemed partner, gifted counsel, and beloved mentor. Although we will miss Marty greatly, we hope to emulate his passion, intellect, and kindness in our work. F I RM UPDAT ES
