The team is very responsive and offers thoughtful guidance.” Client Quote, Chambers USA 2020 PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS Morrison & Foerster represented Winterhawks Sports Group, LLC in the acquisition of the Portland Winterhawks, a junior ice hockey team that plays in the Western Hockey League, out of a receivership proceeding in Canada and the U.S. The acquisition also included substantially all the assets of Avenir Ice Sports and Winterhawks Junior Hockey, which carry on related businesses. The Western Hockey League is one of three leagues operating under the Canadian Hockey League umbrella. The Canadian Hockey League governs the highest level of junior hockey in Canada, known as “major junior,” in which many of the National Hockey League’s top prospects play. The storied Portland Winterhawks franchise is one of the most successful teams in producing NHL players, including Hall of Fame players Mark Messier, Marian Hossa, and Cam Neely, and more than 125 other NHL alumni, including 30 players selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.
