MoFo Foundation 2019 Annual Report

C H A I R ’ S M E S S A G E For over three decades, The Morrison & Foerster Foundation has supported underserved communities and equal access to justice of all kinds. Created in 1986, the Foundation’s earliest charitable contributions included donations to United Way of the Bay Area, the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and Para Los Niños, the first children’s social service agency in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. With financial support primarily from Morrison & Foerster’s lawyers and staff members, the Foundation promotes our collective social engagement while strengthening our local communities. Over the years, the Foundation has contributed $63 million to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations that address social welfare and systemic discrimination through programs focused on legal aid, civil rights, and equity in education, healthcare, and housing. We also strive to diversify the legal profession and create the next generation of public interest lawyers through law school and public interest fellowships. Targeting regions where the firm has offices, our donations help support nonprofits in the United States, Asia, and Brussels, while the firm’s own giving programs foster nonprofit efforts in London and Berlin. Our charitable giving in 2019 totaled $3.3 million. Of that, more than three-quarters was directed to organizations serving disadvantaged youth, fighting discrimination, or providing free legal services to people in need. We also gave to organizations focused on access to quality healthcare and housing, as well as the arts. And we continued our longstanding sponsorship of an undergraduate scholarship program for children of Morrison & Foerster staff members. We also hope to inspire and facilitate charitable giving throughout the Morrison & Foerster community with our special match programs that respond to natural and human-caused disasters. In 2019, we raised and matched donations to nonprofit organizations responding to the economic and environmental impact of the United States government shutdown, and, as 2020 has unfolded, we have offered special match programs to advance racial justice and respond to the health and economic effects of COVID-19. On behalf of our board of directors, I am honored to share with you this report on the MoFo Foundation’s 2019 donations. As always, I especially thank Morrison & Foerster’s partners for their original charitable vision, their long-standing commitment to justice in all its forms, and their continuing support. JAMIE A. LEVITT CHAIR, THE MORRISON & FOERSTER FOUNDATION
