MoForever Alumni News - Summer 2018

2 | MoForever CHA I RMAN ' S L E T T ER welcomed a number of other highly talented new partners to the firm. During the summer we will be joined by two top government officials, Lisa Phelan and John Smith, in our global antitrust law practice and our National Security Group, respectively, helping us further meet our clients’ increasingly complex and expanding regulatory requirements. Please check out the firm’s other new partners in our Firm Update section. Our MoForever Women’s Network alumnae event was well attended and affirms our commitment to women in the profession. We are committed to creating an environment that promotes and celebrates diversity and inclusion. We are pleased that MoFo has been recognized among Yale Law Women’s Top 10 Female Friendly Firms and was ranked the third most diverse firm in the country by Law360 ’s 2018 Diversity Snapshot. Lastly, please remember to register for MoFoLink, our online social networking and job board platform for the MoFo community. Visit MoFoLink to learn more. We wish you all a great summer, and hope you’ll take advantage of the many opportunities for connection with your fellow alumni that MoFo provides. Whether it’s through our digital alumni magazine, through our online social network, MoFoLink, or in person at one of our many alumni networking events, we’re always finding new, meaningful ways to stay connected with our valued alumni across the globe. In this issue’s Alumnus Spotlight, we’re pleased to feature Patrick Zhang, head of IP at Atlassian, a Sydney-based global-enterprise, open-source software company. Patrick shares his story about his innovative IP work across patent, litigation, trademark, and open-source issues; his transition to in-house; and the influence of Morrison & Foerster on his career. We thank Patrick for taking the time to talk with us. We also had the privilege of speaking with Randy Fons, former partner and co-chair of the MoFo Securities Litigation, Enforcement, and White-Collar Defense Group, who is now deputy executive director of the Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center, a nonprofit that seeks to transform the lives of abused, neglected, and at-risk children through compassionate legal advocacy. Thanks to Randy for inspiring us all with his dedication in this issue’s Pro Bono Update and for the good reminder that every lawyer should seek opportunities for social justice. As you all know, MoFo prides itself on its commitment to pro bono. After a nearly nine-year court battle, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ordered the United States Army to provide medical care to the many Vietnam veteran victims of experimental testing at Edgewood Arsenal during their years in military service. MoFo partner James Bennett (who took the case over from Gordon Erspamer upon his passing in 2014) estimated that the firm spent more than 10,000 pro bono hours on the case. Its success was recently featured in National Law Journal ’s 2018 Pro Bono Hotlist. The first half of 2018 has been full of growth and success for our firm and our clients. We continue to work on landmark matters. For example, the firm defended Uber in the nation’s highest-profile trade secrets case against Waymo, Google’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary. The case involved four patents and 121 alleged trade secrets and was a key fight in the heated race to commercialize driverless car technology. We are also lead counsel to Sprint and long- time client SoftBank in the recently announced, industry-changing merger of Sprint and T-Mobile. We were delighted to announce the election of 10 lawyers across the globe to the firm’s partnership at the start of 2018. We have also WELCOME TO THE SUMMER 2018 ISSUE OF MOFOREVER. AS A FIRM PRACTICING ON THE RAZOR’S EDGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION, MOFO EMBRACES THE MANY WAYS IN WHICH WE STAY CONNECTED IN TODAY’S DIGITAL WORLD. LARREN M. NASHELSKY
